My sister attended a church picnic event and said that the popcorn tasted really, really good and the woman told her to use coconut oil instead of canola. I tried it and the coconut oil really makes a difference. I'm usually one of those people that asks for extra butter on my popcorn at the movies, but when I made my popcorn with coconut oil all I needed was some salt.
I know that coconut oil is much more expensive than regular oil, but keeping a bottle for popcorn isn't too expensive, and the difference in taste is worth the extra expense.

coconut oil is amazing and not more expensive if you consider how much you pay for its content of good fats in comparison with crap oils. you would have to use many many times the amount of vegetable oil to get the same fats if you ever could. you can use it for anything, hygiene, baking, frying, and look to the asian indian grocery stores for cheaper sources than the corporate hippie vendors.
