a tomato growing friend in the UK sent this warning.
"They have printed it in the national newspaper over here today to warn people to be very careful when buying compost in plastic bags.
As there have been more cases of death by Legionaries disease from people all over the world by leaning over a bag of freshly opened compost and breathing in the dust and moisture coming out of the bags -there have been several deaths in New Zealand, Australia, parts of Europe and England-all from the same thing.
Apparently it is caused by stacks of compost in suppliers yards, heating up by the sun on them and then the deadly disease sets in and establishes itself in the compost by the condensation of the water vapor inside the bags, people are advised to wear a dust mask when first cutting open a bag and then leave it open for 24 hrs to expose to the air before use.
People are almost totally unaware that they have caught it until it is far too late, and they start getting a fever and flu like symptoms.
Our latest death from it was a man in Scotland who was bent over a freshly cut open bag and scooping it into pots and trays, and he breathed in some of the stuff and was dead a few weeks later despite antibiotics and emergency treatment in hospital.
So please be careful."

I've seen some people wearing surgical masks, when planting their vegetables.
