this was from my mother's irrigated compost beds. the water is from the earth/ well. they got big from the irrigation. my tomatoes get no irrigation and in the dry soil they stay small from drought. today my mother's tomatoes are still producing. mine are mostly dead. she grows more for food. i select for seeds, so in bad years like 2012, some have to die so i can select the ones that do not.
in future years i will continue to trail more croatian and other european varieties, and i look forward to tasting these unique and precious heirlooms.
dalmatiner has strong fruit striping before the fruit chlorophyll breaks down. if this variety were crossed with a gf variety, like a black or GWR, then the resulting fruits may inherit persistant chlorophyl and thereby the fruit striping would remain on the fruits, like in the case of the variety 'arbuznyi' which means watermelon in russian.
